As we move closer to the tail-end of 2020 (everyone’s annus horribilis), The Yak decided to meet some of the fearless few who have planned or opened new businesses in these tougher-than-tough times. Next up: Cinta Ramlan Nunes & Jorge Nunes of Marisqueira.
Name, rank and serial number please…
Cinta Ramlan Nunes and Jorge Nunes, Marisqueira Bali, Seafood House/Portuguese Cuisine.
What makes you tick? We wondered…
Before C-19, my husband and I were working in restaurant businesses in Bali as managers. Unfortunately, we were both victims of the “dirumahkan”. After a few months at home, doing nothing and with no income we told ourselves we should make our own restaurant. We finished the concept proposal just in two days and we then offered a few friends the opportunity to invest. And boom! Marisqueira Bali opened a month later on the 14th of July 2020.
What experiences or services does your brand offer?
Seafood should taste like The Ocean. That is our tagline. Marisqueira is the place to go to enjoy the natural way of cooking seafood. We don’t put any sauce on the seafood. Just garlic, lemon, olive oil. You can choose how you want it to be cooked; boiled, grilled or sauteed. And pair it you’re your favorite sides and dipping sauce from all over the world.
When did you first start planning this business?
We identified the lack of this type of restaurant in Bali together with the demand a few years ago.
While everyone around you was laying-off workers and closing businesses what was it that made you keep going and continue the dream within the unfolding nightmare?
In our perspective this was an opportunity not a risk. If we can survive during C-19 and provide jobs, surely this will work when tourism is back open.
How long have you been in your chosen field of business?
We have been in hospitality businesses for more than 15 years. Forty years combined.
How many people do you employ?
Right now Marisqueira in Berawa we have 35 seats and we employ 12 staff. We are hoping to open another one very soon and will employ more 😀
What are the factors that you appreciate about this C19 business hiatus?
C-19 gave us the push that we needed to move forward and to get us out of our comfort zone.
What upcoming challenges do you foresee?
The adjourn of opening tourism. Bali has suffered enough already because of this pandemic. It saddens us to see businesses closed, deserted streets and robberies everywhere.
Are you currently running any promotional campaigns and / or amazing offers?
All of our food prices in the menu are Covid prices. It will stay that way until tourism is open. Occasionally we have promotions in place but according to the availability. We do offer amazing live seafood every day and the most fresh catches of the day which are caught just for us.
Do you have a mantra, music or a motto (or YouTube video or similar) that you have used, weekly or daily, as you have completed and opened in these trying times? We would love you to share with us.
No mantra, no music. Just the urge to move forward.
Lastly, can you let us know your business opening times and address so we can come visit, and thank you in person for your optimism and passion.
Thanks to The Yak!
