The Yak got down low on a comfy sofa, and chatted with a number of Bali’s top Architects cum Interiors/Concept specialists…Those bricks, mortar and design experts…
Your name, your business and which projects (on and off Bali) have you been involved with?
My name is Sheilla Joveline Terrukeni and I am the CEO and Founder of Azula Designs. Previously, I’ve worked as an interior designer and architect in several companies throughout Bali.
What was it that drew you to Interior Design?
Truly, I love helping clients design the home of their dreams. It’s such fun to take someone’s personality and translate that into a room. Your home, office, or business should be a direct representation of you, so helping people do that is my main inspiration.
What /who were your main influences when you started out in this profession?
Justina Blakely, Peter Marino, and Bobby Berk are some of my favorite interior designers out there. From the architecture perspective, I really love German Bauhaus design, modern, minimalist and Japanese modern architecture.
What other professions had you gone through before cushioning into this one?
I worked as a secretary in Surabaya for a while. It was fun but it was not my passion.
How long have you dedicated yourself to designing “what’s on the inside”?
Four years.
What do you think sets you/your company apart from others?
We are honest, affordable, and innovative. We offer 100% remote design services all around the world or in-person design to those based in Indonesia. We use technology to our advantage and don’t let Covid-19 get in the way of producing an amazing product. We focus the company on efficiency, meaning we are small in operation but we do that so we can offer you the best possible prices unlike some of the bigger names out there. We care for each and every client like family.
Do you/your company have an interior design mantra? A tagline?
“Design quality you love at prices you can afford.”
We don’t want to know the name but who (client) or what (venue) was the biggest challenge – actually, we just want the why! Why was it so challenging?
Clients who are shy or not good at communicating are always the biggest challenge. Yes, we are experts in our field but we are not mind readers. We cannot help you unless you open your soul and your mind to us. Unlike other services, design is a collaborative experience. We want to translate your ideas into reality using our expertise. So the most challenging clients are the ones who don’t give us much to work with.
Best project ever?
Every client is unique and special. So each project is the best ever!
Who would be your dream client?
Every client is a dream client for us. We are just grateful to have this business and meet so many amazing people.
Better question, if you/your company were calling the shots, what criteria would make that client a dream client?
If I really have to answer this question, a dream client is one that knows exactly what they want and can convey that to us easily.
How big was your biggest project?
We designed a house in Costa Rica which in our young history was our biggest project.
Which was your smallest?
A kost in Denpasar.
Which do you prefer – private or commercial properties?
Both are equal in our minds!
Hotels, malls or resorts?
All clients are blessings to us.
Proudest moment?
Getting our first client!
What is on your Interior design bucket list?
Become the most successful interior design and interior architecture firm in Indonesia.
And lastly if The Yak had a project and was looking for an interior designer why would we choose you / your company?
We’re friendly, extremely professional, and will give you the best price possible on your project. We’ll make sure you always come first and if you are not satisfied, you’ll get a full refund. We’re so confident in our quality that we GUARANTEE your satisfaction.
Sheilla, It’s been a pleasure – Thank you for your time…
