We dropped into Oneworld Ayurveda, South East Asia’s leading Ayurvedic Centre, to find out how they manage to make a detox retreat blissful and “easy”.
We gather, that since Bali has so few tourists, Oneworld is kindly offering some amazing introduction packages to experience Ayurveda at your retreat?
Yes, the last year has been incredibly hard for everyone in Bali and we feel blessed that throughout this unprecedented time we have been able to continue to offer healing to those that need it. More so than ever, I think people are aware of their health and how important it is. One of my life mottos is ‘your health is your wealth’ and I really believe in this.
To cater for people in Bali and Indonesia more broadly, we have made a special offer of 50% off Panchakarma (PK). So if you have ever wanted to experience a PK now is the time to do it. A PK is beyond a spa wellness holiday and giving yourself ‘me time’, it is a gift of rejuvenation for the body, mind and soul that everyone deserves.
Can you tell us about the actual retreat ‘space’ itself? (On how many are, number of rooms, facilities, number of therapists, chefs, therapy rooms etc.)
Our Panchakarma centre is an Ayurvedic oasis nestled in the majestic rice terraces of Tegallalang. Flowing over five levels, we have:
– 12 luxury rooms—every detail of these rooms is considered to support you through your PK journey.
– Two dining areas where our chefs serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. You can choose to eat with other guests or have your meals in your room.
– A stunning yoga shala where you’ll do morning and evening Vedic yoga and meditation classes with our experienced yoga teachers.
– An Ayurvedic spa with 8 specially-designed treatment rooms most look out over the rice fields. We have imported all of the traditional massages tables and steam baths and equipment to ensure you are getting authentic Ayurvedic treatments.
– Permaculture gardens in which we grow the majority of our herbs and plants that are used in our treatments and food.
– Being located in Tegallalang, we have breathtaking ricefield walks quite literally on our doorstep and each afternoon you’ll head out on a walk to explore different pockets of these ricefields few get to experience.
What do travelers come to Oneworld looking for?
People come to Oneworld Ayurveda for different reasons—some people are simply looking to do a detox and cleanse, while others may have more serious health issues. When you arrive at Oneworld Ayurveda you will have an extensive consultation with our Ayurvedic doctors who will assess your bio-energies (doshas) and determine any imbalances while also taking into consideration any underlying health conditions you may have. From there they will customise your PK to address these imbalances. It is always interesting, many people come with the simple goal of losing weight, but after consultations with our doctors realise the reason they have the extra weight is due to a health condition they may not even be aware of.
Open since 2016, I gather there are a couple of instrumental people that created Oneworld Ayurveda? Can you introduce them?
Absolutely, a number of people have played a role in making my vision for an authentic Panchakarma centre in Bali a reality. We couldn’t have a Panchakarma centre without knowledgeable doctors from India, the birthplace of Ayurveda. We have had the good fortune of working with some of the best Ayurvedic Doctors. From the very beginning, we have worked with Dr Aparna K. BAMS, MD, PhD.
and Dr Ninnu Sudarshan, BAMS—both are highly accomplished doctors from Kerala who have extensive experience in treating a number of conditions and are formally trained in Ayurvedic medicine.
Your longer retreats are for Panchakarma detox programmes, and you are currently offering a 50% discount off regular prices. What is Panchakarma?
A Panchakarma is based on the science of Ayurveda. A total detox programme, a Panchakarma looks at imbalances in a person’s body then responds to them through Ayurvedic treatments, medicines, yoga, meditation and food. What makes a Panchakarma at Oneworld Ayurveda unique is the marriage of ancient Indian wisdom through their world-class Ayurvedic Doctors with the warmth and charm of Balinese therapists. Over 1,000 people from around the world have been treated and healed through their Panchakarma at Oneworld Ayurveda—hear what they have to say about their PK experience.
And yes, currently we have 50% off our PK programs, so it’s the perfect time to come up to Ubud and experience the healing benefits for yourself.
We gather that the food is not usually that exciting or inspiring when on a Panchakarma detox, but your 35 web pages of testimonials from some of your 1000 guests not only rave about the treatments but also about the food. How is it that Oneworld seems to have raised the bar in the kitchen?
Working with the Ayurvedic doctors and our fabulous chefs at Oneworld Ayurveda I wanted to reinvent Ayurvedic food with an international twist. Some might not know this, but I’m also behind bridges Bali, so it was natural to combine my love of global cuisine with Ayurvedic principles to create something new. I got our executive chef working with our doctors in the same kitchen and they created an awesome menu. Many people who’ve done a PK elsewhere have complained about the food being too bland and repetitive, so we wanted to create a unique dining experience at Oneworld Ayurveda and our guests have loved it! Actually, after many requests, we’ve just released our first cookbook Oneworld Ayurveda’s Secret—Your Kitchen is Your Pharmacy that has 125 delicious and healing recipes in it.
Why did Oneworld Ayurveda choose to focus on Panchakarma?
Besides having been in the world of holistic retreats field since 2003, the reason is quite personal, I was very stressed and wasn’t taking care of myself so a friend suggested that I try a Panchakarma in Sri Lanka. It was a life-changing experience, I couldn’t believe after 14 days how renewed I felt, I had reclaimed my health!
It was at that moment I decided that I needed to do a Panchakarma once a year and that Bali needed a high-quality Panchakarma centre, so I got to work making that dream come true. 5 years later, I still do my 28-day PK each year and the most rewarding thing is seeing the healing effects people from all around the world have experienced by doing a PK with us.
To fully immerse oneself in a Panchakarma retreat how many days do you recommend. I gather you get a lot of guests extending?
It really depends on the reason you are doing a PK and what you hope to get out of it. A 7 or 10 day PK is perfect for people who are not ill and are looking for a de-stressing, preventative stay. ?Should you already have a diagnosis or feel that you are ill, a 14-night stay is the minimum we recommend. ? To fix a long-standing or chronic health issue, an extended Panchakarma of 21 or 28 days is the best solution. If you are unsure about what PK is right for you, you can always contact us and our doctors will be happy to advise you.
If you can’t do a PK right now but think you’d benefit from a consultation with our doctors you can book an online consultation with them.
What can guests expect to “take away” from your current “Ayurvedic Experience”? (The 2-night / 3-day package)
‘An Ayurvedic Experience’ is the perfect introduction to Ayurveda and its principles.
Your stay includes daily consultations with our leading Ayurvedic Doctors, twice daily Vedic yoga and meditation, a one-time relaxing Abhyanga treatment, Ayurvedic meals and herbal teas and a guided rice field walks. While this is not a Panchakarma it will give you a taste of what a PK is like. Many guests who join us for an Ayurvedic Experience return at a later date to experience a full PK.
You have also opened up to a One Day experience? Can you tell us more?
We know Ayurveda is new to a lot of people, so we wanted to create a one-day program that gives those curious about Ayurveda and Panchakarma a chance to learn more.
In the Day at Oneworld Ayurveda, your morning starts with a private consultation with an Ayurvedic Doctor, followed by a relaxing Abhyanga massage, a delicious Ayurvedic lunch, a leisurely rice field walk, and an afternoon Vedic yoga session to end your day.
With so many retreats and alternative practices available these days, why do you recommend healing through Ayurveda?
Why Ayurveda? Ayurveda, or the ‘science of life’, is time-tested, natural, and prevention-oriented—it is recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as one of the world’s oldest comprehensive health care systems.
Why we recommend Ayurveda is quite simple—it’s the results we see time and time again in those who have done a Panchakarma and embraced Ayurvedic wisdom into their everyday lives.
Lastly, to all those that can’t get to Bali right now, does Oneworld Ayurveda have any online programmes that they can sign up for?
