Keep on the grass…
Bali’s global bamboo boom is, as far as I know it, thanks to Linda Garland, her Environmental Bamboo Foundation and the village of Bona – with a shot or two of David Bowie lounging on his bamboo sofa in Mustique…
As we now very well know, bamboo is a versatile and sustainable building material that has been used in construction for thousands of years. It is a type of grass that grows quickly and can reach maturity in just 3-5 years, making it a renewable resource. It is also strong and durable, able to withstand high winds and earthquakes.
Bamboo is often used in the construction of homes, buildings, bridges, and other structures. It can be used for both structural and decorative elements, such as flooring, walls, ceilings, and furniture. Bamboo is also often used in the construction of eco-friendly and sustainable buildings, as it is a natural and biodegradable material that does not necessarily require the use of harmful chemicals or pesticides.
In Asia as Westerners, we are pretty shocked to see that bamboo is also used as scaffolding, as it is lightweight and easy to work with, making it ideal for construction projects in remote or difficult-to-access areas.
Overall, bamboo is a cost-effective and sustainable building material that offers many benefits over traditional materials such as wood or concrete. Its fast growth rate and strength make it an excellent choice for construction projects of all types.
Here in Bali it is now the construction material ‘de jour’…. And below we have invited a few Bali Bamboo-ites to tell us more about their experience, and how their brand has included this increasingly popular grass into their lives!

Bamboo with a Spectacular View…Dharma Oasis
Dharma Oasis is a small boutique hideaway surrounded by traditional rice fields, forest and blessed with seriously breathtaking views.
Having kept as many of the trees on site as possible, they wanted to use a natural building material that blended well with the environment. Bamboo was the ecological building material of choice. It’s sustainable, sourced locally and reduces their carbon footprint.
Teaming up with bamboo specialists, Asali Bali proved to be their best move. Their vernacular concept perfectly fitted Dharma’s goals.
Their design, covering 50 square meters, with a distinctive 90 square meter cathedral-like roof structure, was built from scratch in just three weeks, by seven local craftsmen. Their skilful use of bamboo and roofing thatch created one of the most popular and sought-after suites at Dharma Oasis.
During the day, louvered, folding doors open up to reveal the stunning landscape, including majestic Mount Batukaru, Bali’s second-highest mountain just to the left of the wide, padi field vista. While at night, when closed, the comforting sense of a cocoon is achieved.
The bathroom at the rear of the suite is semi-open to nature and allows the gentle breezes coming off the surrounding countryside to cool your body.
In fact ‘Back to nature’ are the words most often used by guests that have stayed in this divine bamboo house, and thankfully many return.
