Firstly, what is Nyepi? Nyepi literally means to ‘keep silent’! Nyepi is uniquely a Bali celebration. This Hindu New Year is observed once a year, just the day after Tilem Kesanga (the dark moon of the spring equinox), on the first day of Sasih Kedasa, (Bali uses a unique calendar called Pawukon).
Nyepi is a 24-hour period (from 5a.m. to 5a.m.) when no lights or fires are lit, no-one goes out onto the street, except the monitoring pecalang a.k.a village guards, everything is shut, and this includes the airport – just think of how Bali lowers her carbon footprint on this day, ahhh, if only the rest of the world would follow suit!
Four rituals must be observed before and after Nyepi Day, including the popular beach bathing ritual of Melasti – that is only for the temple accoutrements and not the temple goers!
Tawur Kesanga, this ceremony is “based on the concept of Tri Hita Karana’s teachings, which is to align the relationship with the three elements, man with God, man with man and man with the universe.
Tawur Agung Kesanga itself aims to purify the earth prior to Nyepi followed by the actual Nyepi Day and Ngembak Geni.
The most anticipated event is Ngerupuk, which features the Ogoh-Ogoh parade. Ogoh-Ogoh are unique and symbolic sculptures of evil, and each parade is accompanied by a variety of music, shouting and some fire crackers. The celebration symbolizes the exorcism of evil spirits from the island of Bali. The creation of each Ogoh-Ogoh requires a lot of funds, a lot of time and even more competitive artistry. An average Ogoh Ogoh can cost anything from 8 to 50million rupiah and above.
